COURSE DESCRIPTION
Students in high school theatre arts courses will study, write, research, critique, create, design, perform and participate in a variety of theatre-based learning experiences. These courses will develop critical thinking, creativity and aesthetic perception and will reinforce skills in leadership and collaboration. The program of study will generate a heightened sensitivity to the arts and will explore theatre's significance and influence on society. This course is specifically to be hands on in theater focused on production.

TEXTBOOK USED
Theater Art in Action and The Stage and the School along with several supplementary materials.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Charlie Chaplin, Our Town, Street Car Named Desire, Arsenic and Old Lace, Sweeney Todd excerpts from Whose Line is it Anyway?, and others dealing with the arts and theater.
 
CLASSROOM RULES
  • Cell phones and ipods/mp3 players are STRONGLY discouraged. Please use with proper etiquette. Put them away and turned off during appropriate times.  When asked to put away – do so. 
  • Seating Assignments do not happen unless you are disruptive or disrespectful.  There are times that I will individuals to move or if necessary, I will make an entire seating chart. In other words “You may pick your own seat; HOWEVER, the teacher reserves the right to assign you a seat if you are not following the rules of the classroom.” 
  • Do not ask to leave the classroom during instruction or lecture.  
  • Remain quiet but please do participate.  Raise your hand if you have anything to add. 
  • During class work time you need to be working on your assignments as INDIVIDUALS unless otherwise stated by the teacher. 
  • BASICALLY: Our classroom rules are simple. Just remember to be: Prompt, Polite, and Prepared

92 –   85   B
84 –   75   C
74 –   70   D
69 –   0     F
  Grades will consist of written papers, reviews, research, quizzes, tests, and participation. A final exam or project worth 15% of grade will be given at end of semester.

Participation
Participation is graded based on how you interact within the class and the instructor. Participation includes but is not limited to Daily Activities, Group Projects, Behavior, In-class Group Activities, Combined Class Activities, and Individual Responsibilities.
  
CLASSROON POLICES
  • Make-up Work: If you are absent, you will be allowed two days for every day that you missed up to one full week to turn in any missing assignments.
  • Late Work: Late work is general accepted with the nine weeks it was given.  Points will be deducted for late work.
  • Paper Headings: Your first and last name should ALWAYS be included on assignments.  Typically, you will place these items in the upper right hand corner of your assignments.
  • Extra Credit: Extra Credit will be offered throughout the semester. There will be chances to earn points via extra-curricular activities.
  • Food and Drink Policy:  Food or drink is allowed in the classroom as long as common sense is used (no full-course meals please).  If trash is not disposed of on a daily basis, then rights to eat and drink can be taken away from the entire class.   
  • Attendance Policy:  The opportunity to learn about Theater can only be truly successful when active participation is present. Participation in this class is of the highest priority. Everyone in this class must be open and willing to attempt every activity. To participate fully in this class, you must be in attendance every day. You cannot perform, participate and learn if you are not here. It will be difficult to pass this course if you are not here on a daily basis.
  • Restroom Policy: A pass to the restroom will be granted only during times when appropriate and in cases of emergency.  The teacher reserves the right to refuse a pass if the student has been abusing the privilege.  
  • Please refrain from the use of profanity, explicit language, and/or violence within the context of a scene, speech or performance. Failure to comply with this policy will result in a significant grade percentage loss and/or disciplinary action. If something within your scene is questionable, please see your teacher prior to the performance due date.
  • Be a good audience member! Being a good listener is just as important as being a good performer. Points will be deducted for not being a good audience participant.
  
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Theater 2 will focus on students learning by doing.  There will be several projects assigned throughout the semester. Depending on the nature of the assignment, projects will either be individualized, or the instructor will form project groups to accomplish the task. If groups are formed, it is the responsibility of each group member to contribute to the success of the group as each of you will be graded on an individual basis as well as group success. Upon the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
  •  Understand the basic elements of acting and body technique
  • Identify and utilize basic terms used within theatre
  • Write a short script with character analysis.
  • Be able to create publicity announcements, press releases and various others forms of promotional materials.
  • Review and critique a written play.
  • Understand the basic process a director goes through to take a project from inception to completion.
  • Create and present a lighting plot
  • Understand basics of Sound System Techniques.
  • Use stage make up to create bruises and cuts. 
  • Prepare, analyze and memorize a monologue and perform it within the class
